GOP has straw poll
More than 1,000 people, including several statewide GOP candidates, attended the Summit County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Saturday at Quaker Square.
U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette, R-Bainbridge Township, was the featured speaker. He represents the 14th District, which includes parts of Summit and Portage counties, and is unopposed in the May primary but will face Democratic opposition in the November election.
The event included the largest straw poll in Ohio on the contested statewide GOP races in the May 4 primary.
Of the four GOP candidates vying for three at-large Summit County council slots, Gloria Rodgers, Amy Schwan and Bill Roemer won backing.
Roemer is an especially strong candidate. He would bring valuable business experience to the council. The former Ameritech executive and certified public accountant also is active in the community. Among other things, he is a long-term substitute teacher in the Revere schools.
Roemer remains an advocate of regional cooperation among local governments to gain greater efficiency. More, his expertise from the business world would help country government advance economic development projects, and jobs.
Bill has been active in the Richfield community for years, now he wants to serve Summit County. The County Council is the eleven-member legislative authority, taxing authority and policy-making body of the Summit County government. Bill Roemer has the intelligence, initiative, and drive to lead Summit County into the future.
